This page has the purpose to point out to all breeders and lovers every national and international event (shows, competitions ecc.) about Discus. Here will be published also suggestions, news and tricks regarding Discus keeping and breeding, for beginning some discussions , ever if not in real time, about different topics. Of course, it's very important a contribute by the most large possible number of lovers and breeders.

Questa pagina ha come scopo quello di segnalare a tutti gli appassionati qualsiasi avvenimento (mostre, concorsi ecc.), a livello sia nazionale che internazionale, che veda come protagonista il Discus. In questa sede verranno inoltre pubblicati tutti i suggerimenti, notizie e piccoli trucchi riguardanti l'allevamento del Discus, in modo tale da poter eventualmente dare inizio anche a veri e propri dibattiti, seppur non in tempo reale, su questo o quel tema particolare. E' comunque fondamentale, ed è forse superfluo sottolinearlo, il contributo del maggior numero possibile di allevatorie appassionati.

Con piacere inauguro la pagina del sito dedicata alle news con un commento e alcune riflessioni "dal vivo" sul grande show tenutosi a Duisburg dal 3 al 6 ottobre, sperando così di poter essere utile ai tanti appassionati che, per i più svariati motivi, non vi hanno partecipato. Lo show si è tenuto presso la Rhein-Rurh-Halle di Duisburg nel nord della Germania ed è stato articolato in tre diversi momenti: un concorso aperto a tutti, una mostra-mercato e una serie di conferenze. Il concorso vedeva la partecipazione di un numero massiccio di esemplari, articolati nelle seguenti categorie:
A) Heckel
B) Brown
C) Blue
D) Green
E) Striped Turquoise
F) Solid Turquoise
G) Red Turquoise
H) Red
I ) Hybrids
In ognuna delle categorie sono stati premiati i primi tre classificati e l'esemplare che in assoluto ha avuto la migliore votazione è stato eletto 'Best in Show'. Ciò che di nuovo e di realmente importante si è avuto in tale concorso è stata l'idea, per la prima volta messa in pratica da M.Gobel, di cercare di uniformare il più possibile i criteri di valutazione da utilizzarsi da parte dei differenti giudici per giudicare i vari esemplari in concorso. Il sig. Gobel, membro autorevole dell' I.D.J.S. (International Discus Judging System), ha creato un programma inserito in un computer grazie al quale , individuata una serie di elementi da osservare per una corretta valutazione del soggetto ( forma, colore, armonia delle proporzioni ecc.), si fornisce ad ognuno di essi una grado di importanza e si esegue un controllo di omogeneità tra i vari giudizi espressi su di un soggetto. Questo al fine di stabilire un criterio di valutazione delle caratteristiche del Discus che sia valido in ogni parte del mondo evitando di dare u peso eccessivo nella valutazione ai gusti personali dei giudici. Il gruppo dei giudici era formato da persone di grande e provata esperienza nel campo dell'allevamento dei Discus:

Il lavoro fatto dai giudici è stato sicuramente di ottimo livello anche se non era facile scegliere tra i tanti Discus in concorso, tutti molto belli. Al di là del concorso, che ha comunque premiato il lavoro e la passione di diversi allevatori innamorati dei Discus, la mostra è stata un momento importante per ammirare il meglio della produzione di grossi allevatori internazionalmente molto noti e l'occasione per molti hobbyisti di competere con essi senza troppo sfigurare. Nella mostra-mercato erano presenti numerosi stands in cui erano in vendita sia prodotti tecnici per il filtraggio e per la cura della chimica dell'acqua che libri e riviste, sia naturalmente tanti e tanti Discus. Di tutte le misure e varieta': dai verdi selvatici, ai rossi provenienti dagli allevamenti asiatici, ai tanti Pigeon Blood, alle varietà con nomi fantasiosi (Golden Sun Rising...);il livello qualitativo? Direi, perlopiù molt buono .Una cosa che mi ha particolarmente colpito sia nella competizione che nella mostra-mercato è stata la quasi assoluta mancanza sia di partecipanti al concorso che di ditte espositrici americane. Peccato! Perchè si è persa la possibilit` di apprezzare il livello raggiunto nel nostro hobby in America e di confrontarsi con i nostri amici di oltre oceano. A questo proposito spero che si possa ovviare in occasione della prossima edizione dello show. Bisogna dire che erano comunque presenti grossi allevatori del calibro di Jack Wattley, Bing H. Seto, Peter Thode anche se in veste di visitatori o giudici. Erano poi presenti grossi nomi come Bernd Degen, Heiko Bleher, Shaifullah Yeng e tanti altri. Un altro appunto che devo fare riguarda le ditte espositrici ed è quello che, specie per i prodotti tecnici presenti, era difficile reperire materiale informativo in lingua inglese; ciò mi è sembrato particolarmente strano in una manifestazione internazionale. Riguardo alle conferenze che si sono svolte durante i quattro giorni della manifestazione devo dire che sono state molto interessanti e tenute da persone molto qualificate:

In particolare sono rimasto particolarmente colpito dalla conferenza sulle malatte dei Discus, riguardante tutte le più comuni malattie dei nostri beniamini e i loro trattamenti, tenuta in maniera magistrale e con dovizia di immagini da Dieter Untergasser. Altrettanto interessante anche se per motivi diversi la conferenza del Dr. Lim sul suo programma di selezione che ha portato già alla creazione di un Discus completamente bianco ( non albino ma bianco ) e che porterà, secondo lui, alla nascita di varietà nuove e strabilianti. Anche riguardo le conferenze, l'unico problema è derivato dal fatto che per alcune di esse non era prevista la traduzione simultanea in inglese . In conclusione devo dire che la prima manifestazione internazionale dedicata interarmente al Discus tenutasi in Europa ha avuto un livello di riuscita decisamente buono anche se con margini di possibile miglioramento che sicuramente saranno raggiunti in occasione della seconda edizione che si terrà tra due anni nella medesima città. Una menzione particolare va comunque fatta nei riguardi sia di Manfred Gobel che di Dieter Untergasser per il grande impegno durante lo show e la grande disponibilit` dimostrata nei confronti dei tanti appassionati che hanno loro posto quesiti riguardo il meraviglioso oggetto del nostro hobby: il SYMPHYSODON DISCUS.

I am very happy to start with the page of this site dedicated to the news with a commentary and some considerations on the great show that was made in Duisburg (Germany) from 3th to 6th of october. I hope that so I can help many fanciers that, for many reasons, could not attend to the show. The show developed at the Rhein-Rurh-Halle in Duisburg in the north of Germany and was subdivided in three parts: a competition, an exhibition and a sequence of lectures. The competition was open for all breeders and there was a good number of fishes that were organized in these classes:
A) Heckel
B) Brown
C) Blue
D) Green
E) Striped Turquoise
F)Solid Turquoise
G)Red Turquoise
H) Red
I) Hybrids
In every class they were awarded the best three subjects and the Discus with the absolute best vote was awarded as the 'Best in Show'. In this competition what was really new and important was the idea, realized by Mr. Manfred Gobel, of try to uniform the rules used by the judges for assess the Discuss.
Mr. Gobel, that is an important member of the I.D.J.S. (International Discus Judging System), has created a computer program that, after differentiating some elements for a correct valuation of a subject (shape, colour, harmonic proportion of body, ..... ), gives to every element a different grade of consequence and make an homogeneity control betwen the different opinions of the judges regarding the fish.This is made in order to create a valuation ratio regarding the Discus's peculiarity that can be used in every part of world and, at the same time, it is made to avoid that a valuation is taken only on the judges' personal tastes. The judges' group was formed by men of great and known experience in Discuss' breeding:

The judges' work was surely of a great quality also we think that it was difficult to select betwen all the Discus that were all very fine. During the competition we have seen the work of many little breeders and hobbyst and the best of the production of others great ones internationally known.
In the part of the Rhein-Rurh-Halle dedicated to the exibition there were many stands in which they were sold products for filters,products for water-conditioning, books, papers, periodically and many and many Discuss.
They were of all sizes and strains: Wild Greens, Asian Reds, many Pigeon Blood, many new strains with fanciful names (Golden Sun Rising...); Regarding the qualitative level I can tell that it was a good one.
I was struck by the absolute absence even in the competition that in the exibition of american breeders and manufacturer. What a pity ! We have lost an important occasion to appreciate the level that our hobby has reached in Usa.

We went on a friday to Duisburg with 4 persons 3 off them are breeders. We leaving Utrecht from 09:30 and arrive on 11:30. The way to Duisburg was easy but finding the Rhein Ruhr Halle was difficult, because there was no signs to the Rhein Ruhr Halle. When we arrived we saw that the show was divided in two parts, on one side standing the tanks and one side where many companies and breeders showed everything you want for your hobby. The tanks where the discus in swim had a size off 50x50x50. The most Discus looks fine but i saw discus who had fin rot and some stressed Discus and labels that say some Discus were not arrived. The winner (i lost the complete list) off the nine categories was a brown Discus. I think this was not the nicest fish at the show but who am i? I have spoken with several people and have seen many things for tanks and can only say I am sorry that you(all) not was there. I hope that this show come again anywhere on the world and i will try to get there. The show was good organised by Zoo Zajac, Tetra Sera and Stadwerke Duisburg AG.
